The Wonders of Wet Portland

Emily has been learning to ride the train in Portland, and she is loving it in spite of the downpour we were all caugtht in last night when we rode the train to the grocery store. At least she got a balloon out of the deal.

Today we ventured out again and went downtown. Because the train was crowded, she discovered the hand straps and wanted to hold on even when seats were available. We ended up at Powell's Bookstore which is HUGE, so while Nana Jo looked around upstairs at all the Shakespeare books, Emily and Mama read books in the Red Room. While Emily napped this afternoon, Nana Jo & Mama went out on errands and Nana Jo bought Emily an umbrella which was a hit. She knew it was for outside, so she wanted to go out in the rain which we did (only mist but that counts, doesn't it?). We went across the street to a big park to try out the umbrella, but there was a cool fountain which made it more fun to actually get wet. What's wrong with this picture? Emily is standing in the rain while Daddy and Mama are under Emily's umbrella!Emily had so much fun trying to catch the water as it went up and down from the sidewalk. At last she caught it!

After she was totally soaked, she took a warm bath, put on a pretty dress, and we headed back for the train to go downtown for dinner at an authentic Irish pub.

The trains were so crowded that Emily actually got to stand and hold on to one of the poles and learned to balance very well. She looked so cute in her little dress & ponytails, but I couldn't get a picture because we were so packed on the train. She kept everyone entertained, and had a new audience at every stop as people got on and off the train...such a ham!
